What it looks like when someone blocks you
Instagram never tells you. The person simply stops existing: their username returns nothing in search, opening their profile from an old DM shows nothing, or it loads but reads "No posts yet" while the post count above it is greater than zero. Tapping follow snaps back. You can't tag them anymore.
The catch is that none of those signs belong to blocking alone. If they switched to a private account, changed their username, deactivated, or got suspended by Instagram, your side looks nearly identical. "I can't find them" is not a conclusion, and this is exactly where most guides stop.
Blocked or deactivated: how to tell them apart
There is a clean test, and it turns on one asymmetry: a block is aimed at you specifically, while deactivating or deleting an account applies to everybody. So look at the same account from a viewpoint that isn't yours, and the two separate immediately.
By hand: open a private browsing window, stay logged out, and go to instagram.com/theirusername. If the profile loads while logged out but not from your account, you're blocked. If it's missing even when logged out, they changed their username, deactivated, or deleted — none of which is about you.

Blocked, restricted, muted, or soft blocked
Blocking is the strongest. They can't see any of your content, you can't see theirs, and the follow relationship is severed in both directions — unblocking later doesn't restore it.
Restricting is quiet. They can still see your posts, but their comments are visible only to them, and their messages land in your requests without a notification. They are not told they've been restricted.
Muting only hides their posts and stories from your feed; nothing changes on their end at all. A soft block is blocking and immediately unblocking, which removes the follow without the permanence — from their side it just looks like you unfollowed them.
Only one of these makes a person unfindable, and that's a full block. If you can still find their account and your DMs still send, you're probably looking at one of the others.
Why "who blocked me" apps ask for your password
Instagram offers no official way to see who has blocked you, so anything advertising a blocked-by list is reconstructing it by signing in as you. That hands your credentials to a third party, and the usual outcome is an action block, a login alert, or a stolen account.
Nothing on this page needs your password, and there's nothing to install. It does what anyone with a private browsing window could do — look at whether an account exists from the outside — and saves you the steps.
What this tool can and can't tell you
It can tell you whether an account exists publicly right now, whether it's public or private, and how many followers it has. That half is objective and has nothing to do with who you are.
It cannot tell you whether you have been blocked. Answering that requires looking at them from your account, and we don't have your login and won't ask for it. Anything promising to reveal who blocked you in one tap is either guessing or signing in as you.
So use it as one half of a pair: we tell you what the outside sees, you check what your side sees. A mismatch is a block. A match isn't.

How do I know if someone blocked me on Instagram?
Compare two viewpoints. Check whether the account exists from a logged-out view (a private browsing window, or the tool on this page), then look for it from your own account. Visible outside but not to you means blocked. Missing from both means they deactivated or changed their username.
Did they block me or deactivate their account?
It comes down to scope. A block applies to you alone, so a logged-out view can still find them. Deactivating or deleting applies to everyone, so a logged-out view finds nothing either. This page checks that logged-out side for you.
What does it look like if someone blocked you on Instagram?
Their username stops appearing in search, their profile shows no posts (sometimes with a post count above zero), and the follow button snaps back if you try. But a private switch or a username change looks much the same, which is why the sign alone isn't proof.
