Why Instagram won't show you who unfollowed you
There is no unfollower list inside the app, and there never has been. Adam Mosseri has said publicly that Instagram has no plans to add one: the company treats a quiet unfollow as a private action, and surfacing it would make the platform feel more confrontational than it already does.
So every tool that claims to show unfollowers is reconstructing the answer from outside. The honest ones do it the way this page does — by comparing two snapshots of your own follower list. The rest ask you to log in with your Instagram credentials, which hands your account to a third party and is the fastest route to getting rate-limited or locked out.
How to get your Instagram export file
Open Instagram, go to your profile and tap the menu in the top right. Tap "Accounts Center", then "Your information and permissions", then "Export your information".
Tap "Create export", pick the account you want and tap "Next", then choose "Export to device".
On the screen that follows you can narrow down what goes into the export. Turn everything off except the followers and following data — the archive is built far faster that way. Set the date range to cover everything, and, importantly, set the format to JSON rather than HTML. HTML looks the same in the download but can't be compared line by line. Then tap "Start export".
Instagram emails you a download link when the archive is ready. That takes anywhere from a few minutes to a day, depending on how much history the account has. Save the .zip somewhere you'll find it again — you'll need it as the "before" half of the comparison.
Why you need two exports, not one
This is the part most guides skip, and it is the difference between an answer and a near-answer. A single export is one snapshot in time. It can tell you who you follow that doesn't follow you back, but it cannot tell you whether those accounts dropped you last week or never followed you in the first place.
Unfollowing only becomes visible as a change between two points. Request an export today, keep it, request another in a few weeks, and the accounts that vanished from the follower list in between are the ones who unfollowed you. That comparison is the whole job of this page.

Your archive is opened by JavaScript running in this tab. The zip is unpacked in memory, the two follower lists are compared, and the result is drawn on screen. No part of the file is sent to our servers, because there are no servers involved in this page at all.
That is also why there is no account to create and no password to type. If a tool asks for your Instagram login to tell you who unfollowed you, it is not reading a data export — it is signing in as you.

Can I see who unfollowed a private account?
Only your own. The export contains your follower list regardless of whether your account is private, so this works fine for a private profile of your own. It cannot tell you anything about someone else's followers.
How far back can I check?
As far back as your oldest saved export. There is no way to reconstruct unfollows from before your first archive, which is why it is worth requesting one today even if you have nothing to compare it to yet.
Does the person get notified that I checked?
No. Nothing here touches their account or Instagram's servers. You are reading a file that Instagram already gave you.
