How to download an Instagram Reel thumbnail
Open the Reel or video post in the Instagram app, tap the share icon and choose “Copy link”. On a computer, copy the address from the browser bar instead; it looks like instagram.com/reel/… or instagram.com/p/….
Paste the link into the box above and press Get thumbnail. The cover image appears full size, with a Download thumbnail button under it.
Tap Download thumbnail and the JPG is saved. On an iPhone it goes to the Files app, in Downloads: open it there, tap share and choose “Save Image” to move it to Photos. On Android it lands in the Download folder and shows up in your gallery. On a computer it goes to your Downloads folder.
What is an Instagram thumbnail?
The thumbnail is the still image people see before a video plays: on the profile grid, in the Reels tab, in search and in the feed. For a Reel, the creator either picks a frame from the video or uploads a separate image as the cover.
Because the thumbnail is a picture rather than part of the video, saving the video does not give it to you as a file. That is the gap this page fills: it pulls the cover image Instagram stores for the post and hands it to you as a JPG.
Thumbnail vs cover photo
They are the same thing. Instagram's own editor calls it the cover (“Edit cover”), while most people, and YouTube, call it the thumbnail. Searching for an Instagram reel cover download or an Instagram thumbnail download leads to the same file.
One difference you will notice: the profile grid shows the cover cropped to a shorter rectangle, so the full cover you download is taller than what you saw on the grid. Nothing is missing; the grid just hides the top and bottom.
Why is the thumbnail blurry or cropped?
You get the cover at the size Instagram serves it, without any extra compression from us. Reel covers are vertical (9:16), and Instagram keeps them at a lower resolution than the video itself, often around 640 pixels wide. If the creator picked a frame from a soft or dark part of the video, the cover carries that too.
If you need a sharper still, download the video with the button under the thumbnail and take a screenshot of the exact frame you want while it plays at full quality.
Can I download the thumbnail of a private account's Reel?
No. Posts from private accounts are only shown to approved followers, so no website can fetch them, this one included. If a link fails, check that the account is public and that the post still exists.
Using someone else's thumbnail
Saving a cover from a public post for reference, a mood board or to keep your own work is fine, and the account owner is not notified. The image still belongs to whoever made it: to repost it, put it in an ad or use it in your own content, ask for permission and give credit.

Frequently asked questions
How do I download an Instagram thumbnail?
Copy the link of the Reel or video post, paste it into the box above and press Get thumbnail. Then tap Download thumbnail to save the cover image as a JPG.
Can I download the cover image of a Reel?
Yes. The cover of a Reel is its thumbnail: paste the Reel link and the cover image comes back full size, ready to save.
Is this Instagram thumbnail downloader free?
Yes. There is no account, no app to install and no paid plan. Paste a public link and save the thumbnail.
Will the creator know I downloaded the thumbnail?
No. Instagram does not notify anyone when a public post's cover is saved, and this tool never touches your account or theirs.
Can I get the thumbnail from a private account?
No. Private posts are only visible to approved followers, so they cannot be fetched by any website.
What format and size is the downloaded thumbnail?
A JPG, at the size Instagram stores the cover. Reel covers are vertical (9:16) and are often around 640 pixels wide.
