"I tapped Leave and nothing happened." "The app keeps freezing." "I never tapped exit, but suddenly I'm not in the group." These three complaints generate a lot of search traffic every month.
This guide sorts every "can't leave" and "mysteriously removed" case into 5 scenarios, with a diagnostic flow for each.
5 "can't leave" or "got removed" scenarios — quick triage
| What you're seeing | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Leave group, nothing happens, spinning | Network instability or temporary LINE issue | Switch networks, restart app (see Scenario 1) |
| Error message "Unable to leave group" appears | App version outdated or group data corrupted | Update LINE, reinstall (see Scenario 2) |
| Never tapped exit, but you're not in the group anymore | Removed by admin, or auto-cleared after long inactivity | Look for "You have been removed from this group" message (see Scenario 3) |
| OpenChat shows "You have been forcibly removed from this chat" | Banned by admin or LINE for breaking OpenChat rules | Check the removal reason in the notification (see Scenario 4) |
| Some groups missing after switching phones | New device hasn't synced, or old device still has them | Verify account sign-in state (see Scenario 5) |
Each scenario unpacked below.

Scenario 1: Leave button doesn't respond / app freezes / endless spinner
The most common failure mode. Usually a temporary network or LINE server hiccup, not an actual "can't leave" situation. Diagnostic order:
- Check your network: switch between 4G/5G and Wi-Fi, try again.
- Force-close LINE and reopen: iOS — swipe up to close → reopen; Android — clear from recents → reopen.
- Restart your phone: surprisingly effective.
- Check LINE for a server notice: open LINE → Settings → look for a yellow banner.
- If it's an OpenChat: an admin might be changing group settings (locking the group, removing members) right at that moment, which briefly blocks operations. Wait 5–10 minutes and try again.
90% of "can't leave" problems are solved by restarting the app. If all 5 steps fail, jump to Scenario 2.

Scenario 2: Error message "Unable to leave group"
If LINE explicitly throws an error, the cause is more concrete:
- Outdated LINE app: update LINE from the App Store / Google Play. This is the most common root cause, especially if you haven't updated for over a year.
- Group data corruption: the local group file may be corrupted. Back up chat history to the cloud first (if you still need it), then reinstall LINE. Reinstalling forces a fresh pull of group data.
- iOS version too old: LINE has minimum OS requirements. Older iPhones may struggle with newer features.
WARNING: Before reinstalling LINE, back up your groups to the cloud — reinstalling wipes the local chat history.

Scenario 3: Never tapped exit, but you're not in the group anymore
This one's the most confusing. Three possible causes:
Cause A: Removed by an admin (most common)
The group will have a system message: "You have been removed from this group by the admin" (regular group) or "You have been removed from this chat" (OpenChat). If you can still see that message (in your notification area, or as a "[group message]" entry in your 1-on-1 history), that's your answer — you were kicked.
To get back in after being kicked, you need another group member or admin to re-invite you.
Cause B: Auto-cleared for inactivity
LINE OpenChats may automatically clear inactive members — typically 90+ days without entering the chat. Regular groups don't have this behavior.
Cause C: The group was dissolved
The group disappeared from your chat list, but you weren't kicked or did you leave — that means the group was dissolved by the admin or the last remaining member left. OpenChats can sometimes be flagged for rule violations and shut down, removing everyone at once.
How to tell which: ask another former member "am I no longer in the group?" If they're also gone → group was dissolved. If they're still in → you were kicked.

Scenario 4: OpenChat shows "You have been forcibly removed from this chat"
This only happens in LINE OpenChat and means an admin or LINE itself flagged you for breaking the rules:
- Manual admin removal: an admin saw something against the group rules — spam, ads, cross-group recruiting, etc.
- Automatic system removal: triggered keywords (gambling, adult content, sensitive political terms), reported by multiple members, or flagged as a bot account.
If you're forcibly removed, you'll be added to that OpenChat's blacklist and can't rejoin with the same account. If you believe it was a mistake, you can appeal via LINE Care, but success rates are low — most people just give up on that OpenChat.

Scenario 5: Some groups missing after switching phones
You moved to a new phone via QR code or phone-number transfer, and a few groups are missing. Possible reasons:
- No backup before transfer: LINE's phone migration only carries 14 days of chat history. No backup = old chat history doesn't carry over. But your group membership should still be intact — open LINE, search the group name, and see if it shows up. The group may still be there, just not in your chat list.
- The group is genuinely gone: if even search can't find it, you may have already left it on the old phone, or the group was dissolved.
- iOS ⟷ Android transfer: cross-OS transfers don't guarantee all chat history is preserved (LINE officially confirms this), but group membership still carries over.
Tried everything to leave and want a fresh approach?
If you've tried every diagnostic, can't leave, or just don't want to keep seeing the group, switch strategy:
- Hide the chat (swipe left on the group → Hide) — no exit needed, just disappears from your chat list.
- Mute group notifications — it stays, but stops bothering you.
- Mute + push to the bottom of the chat list — visually it's gone.

If you got kicked out by someone specific?
People who get kicked out of a group always ask the same follow-up: "did they also block me one-on-one?"
LINE hides block status carefully — 1-on-1 messages still appear as "unread," their avatar still loads, everything looks normal — but nothing arrives on the other end. The fastest way to confirm is a one-tap scan tool.
Got kicked out and suspect a 1-on-1 block too? LINE Block Checker signs in once, scans your entire friend list in 5 seconds, and tells you anonymously who blocked you.
Frequently Asked Questions
I restarted and reinstalled LINE — still can't leave the group. What now?
Last resort: try leaving from LINE's desktop client. Sometimes the mobile app's sync with the server gets stuck, and a fresh sign-in on desktop forces a refresh of the group list. If desktop also fails, contact LINE Care to report the issue.
After being "forcibly removed" from an OpenChat, can I rejoin?
Usually not. Forced removal blacklists your account from that OpenChat. Unless the admin manually removes you from the blacklist, you can't rejoin with the same LINE account.
When I get kicked from a group, do other members get a notification?
The admin who kicked you knows (they did it). Other members will see the "XXX has been removed from the group" system message in the chat. You, the person who got kicked, will get a notification in your notification area.
Does auto-exit preserve chat history?
No. Whether you left on purpose, got kicked, got auto-cleared, or the group was dissolved — once the group is gone from your account, your phone's chat history is wiped. No exceptions.
