Italic without an italic button

Unicode defines italic variants of the Latin alphabet as their own characters, mostly for mathematical notation. Pasting 𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤 into a bio works because the slant is built into each character instead of being an instruction the app has to honour.

One gap is worth knowing: the serif italic block has no lowercase h at the expected position. The italic ℎ used in physics fills that slot here — it is the reason a naive italic generator produces a box on exactly one letter.

Sans, serif or bold italic

Sans italic is closest to Instagram's own typeface and is the one that looks intentional rather than pasted. Serif italic reads more formal and works for a quote line. Bold italic is heavy enough to carry a single emphasised phrase in a caption.

As with every style here, the result is no longer normal text for search purposes — keep your name plain somewhere on the profile.

Frequently asked questions

Can I italicise part of a caption?

Yes. Convert only the words you want slanted and paste them in among your normal text.

Does italic text work on LinkedIn and X?

Both accept it in bios and posts. LinkedIn in particular is a common use, since it has no formatting options at all.

Why does my italic text show as boxes?

The device is missing font coverage for the mathematical alphabets. Sans italic has the broadest support of the three.
