The repost button sits right under every public post and Reel, between the comment and share icons, and it's easy to hit by accident. The good news: a repost is one of the easiest things on Instagram to take back. There's no "unrepost" menu item to hunt for. You tap the same button again.
Below: how to undo a single repost, how to delete a pile of them at once, what the original creator sees, and how to confirm the repost is really gone from your profile.
Quick answer
- Just reposted something by mistake? Tap the repost icon on that same post again. It's highlighted while the repost is active; tapping it removes the repost.
- Undo an older repost: Profile → Reposts tab → open the post or Reel → tap the highlighted repost icon → confirm.
- Delete all your reposts at once: Profile → Menu → Your activity → Reposts → Select → pick them → Delete.
- Check it worked: run your username through the Instagram Repost Viewer to see your Reposts tab the way a stranger does.
How to undo a repost on Instagram
Step 1: Open your profile and tap the Reposts tab
Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner. Under your bio, tap the Reposts tab, the icon with two curved arrows next to Posts and Reels. Everything you've reposted is there, newest first.
Step 2: Open the post or Reel you want to remove
Tap it to open it full screen. You'll see the original creator's name on it; the repost itself is just your link to their post.
Step 3: Tap the repost icon again
The repost icon under the post is highlighted because you reposted it. Tap it, and confirm Remove repost if Instagram asks. On some versions you can also tap the three dots (⋯) and choose Remove repost. The post disappears from your Reposts tab right away.
If you only just hit the button in your Feed, you don't need to go to your profile at all: tap the highlighted icon on that same post and the repost is undone.
How to delete all your reposts at once
If you've reposted a lot and want to clear them out, use Your activity instead of opening them one by one:
- Go to your profile and tap the Menu (three lines) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Your activity, then Reposts.
- Tap Select in the top-right corner.
- Tap each repost you want to remove. If your version of the app doesn't offer a select-all option, tapping through the grid is still much faster than one at a time.
- Tap Delete at the bottom and confirm.
This removes the reposts from your profile. It doesn't touch the original posts, which still belong to the people who made them.
Does the person know if you unrepost?
There's no "unreposted" notification. When you reposted, the creator normally got an activity notification that you reposted their post or Reel. Removing the repost doesn't send a second one.
What you can't control is what they already saw. If they opened that first notification before you undid the repost, they know you reposted it, even if it's gone now. For a repost you undo within seconds, there's a good chance they never noticed.
After you undo it: who can still see it?
- Your Reposts tab: it's gone immediately.
- Your followers' Feed: the repost stops being shown. Anyone who already scrolled past it saw it, and nothing can take that back.
- Screenshots: obviously stay wherever they ended up.
To be sure your profile looks the way you think it does, type your username into the Instagram Repost Viewer. It loads your Reposts tab without logging in, exactly as someone who doesn't follow you would see it. If a repost you removed still shows, wait a few minutes and check again.
Why is the Reposts tab still on my profile?
Some people find the Reposts tab stays on their profile even after they've removed every repost. Instagram has no setting that hides the tab itself. An empty tab doesn't show anything to visitors, though, so once your reposts are deleted there's nothing left for anyone to see in it.
If the real goal is that nobody sees your reposts at all, the options are covered in How to Hide or Turn Off Reposts on Instagram.
Undoing your repost vs. removing someone else's
Undoing a repost only works on reposts you made. If someone else reposted your post and you want it gone:
- You can't delete their repost. There's no button for it.
- You can stop new reposts by turning off Reposts on posts and reels under Menu → Sharing and reuse (step by step here).
- You can archive or delete your original post. A repost has nothing to show once the original is gone.
If it was a Story share, not a repost
Sharing a post to your Story isn't a repost and doesn't show up in the Reposts tab. To take it back, open your Story, tap the three dots (⋯) and choose Delete. If it's saved in a Highlight, remove it from the Highlight as well.
Curious what someone else is reposting?
Removing your own reposts is a one-time cleanup. If what you actually keep checking is another account's Reposts tab, Recent Follow by IGExport shows the reposts of any public account you look up inside the app, together with the accounts they followed most recently, and can notify you when they follow someone new.
Frequently asked questions
How do you unrepost on Instagram?
Open the post or Reel you reposted (from your profile's Reposts tab, or right where you found it) and tap the highlighted repost icon again. Confirm Remove repost if asked, and it's gone from your profile.
How do I delete all my reposts on Instagram at once?
Go to Menu → Your activity → Reposts, tap Select, choose the reposts you want to remove, and tap Delete. It's the only bulk option Instagram offers.
Does someone get notified when you remove a repost?
No. Instagram doesn't send a notification when a repost is removed. The creator may still have seen the original "reposted your post" notification if they opened it before you undid it.
How do I remove a repost from my profile?
The same way you undo one: open it from your Reposts tab and tap the repost icon again. Removing it takes it off your profile and out of your followers' Feed.
Why can't I find a post I reposted?
If the creator deleted or archived the original, or made their account private, the repost disappears with it. There's nothing left for you to remove.
Can I remove someone else's repost of my post?
Not directly. You can turn off reposts so no one new can repost you, or archive or delete the original post, which takes existing reposts down with it.
Does undoing a repost remove the like I gave the post?
No. A repost and a like are separate. Likes and comments always belong to the original post, so removing your repost leaves your like where it was.
