Why a bio cannot simply be made bold
Bold in a document is formatting: the letter stays an A and the app is told to draw it heavier. An Instagram bio has no formatting layer at all, so there is nothing to tell. These generators get around it by handing you a different character — 𝗔 is its own letter in Unicode, defined as the sans-serif bold A, and it stays bold because the weight is part of the character rather than an instruction attached to it.
The side effect is that the result is not searchable as normal text. Someone looking for your brand name will not match the bold version of it, so it is usually better to keep the name plain and bold the line around it.
Which weight to pick
Sans bold is the safest and reads closest to Instagram's own typeface. Serif bold is heavier and stands out more in a wall of text. Bold italic is the one that tends to look like a mistake in a bio but works well for a single emphasised word inside a caption.
Bold gothic and bold cursive are on the fancy end and are listed here too, but they cost readability — at the small size a bio renders on mobile, a few words is about the limit.

Does bold text work in Instagram captions and comments?
Yes. Bios, captions, comments and display names all accept it. Usernames do not, since handles are limited to letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
Why does my bold text show as boxes for some people?
Their device is missing the font coverage for those characters — usually an older Android build. The sans and serif bold styles have the widest support; if a specific audience matters, test with one of them first.
Can I bold only part of a sentence?
Yes. Convert the words you want bold, copy them, and paste them into the middle of your normal text. Nothing here requires the whole line to be converted.
