The line is part of the characters
Each letter gets a combining long stroke overlay attached to it. The stroke is drawn as part of the character, so it travels with the text into fields that strip every other kind of formatting — which is the entire point, since Instagram has no strikethrough button.
The same trick gives you underline, double underline, overline and a diagonal slash. They are listed together here because they are the same mechanism with a different mark.
Where it breaks
Combining marks are the least portable thing in this toolbox. Some apps draw the stroke slightly offset; a few older Android builds draw a separate dash after each letter instead of through it. Paste it into a message to yourself before committing it to a bio.
Copying struck-through text back out gives you the marks too, so search and paste into other tools can behave oddly. For anything functional — a price, a link — leave the text plain.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the strikethrough look broken in some apps?
The overlay character is positioned by the font, and not every font places it identically. Apps with narrow line spacing sometimes shift it up or down; the characters themselves are fine.
Does the line count toward the character limit?
Yes. Every letter carries one extra character, so struck-through text uses roughly twice the count of the plain version.
Can I strike through only a few words?
Yes. Convert just those words and paste them into the middle of your normal text.
